This is what is known as a lolly column. They are often found in basements when someone is trying to strengthen the sagging floors. As you can see, they rust and bend. Sometimes they even rust so bad that they fall apart.
This is a home that had the outer wall extended to included the porch. The added weight made the so-called supports sink into the ground.
What you are seeing is a standard basement window, its below ground level and has a little window well to let the light into the basement. The major problem that people see with these windows is that the well acts as a funnel and catches a lot of rain water. The water sits up against the window and slowly leaks through the little seams and cracks. DryZone uses a well duct system to relieve this issue. Basically, its a small pipe system that directs the rain ad ground water into your existing basement drainage pipe. The water won't sit up against the window long enough to cause problems anymore.
Ever notice that painting the basement walls never lasts? The reason is that concrete has lots of little holes in it and the water vapor will always find a way in. The paint chips and peels away because the vapor builds up and pushes against the layer of paint. Brightwall is a great product because it allows the walls to breathe a little while keeping them looking fantastic. You'll never have to paint again with Brightwall.
Ocean Pines is a pretty large community on the Eastern Shore of MD. DryZone is frequently doing work on homes there. This home is pretty typical of what we see in that area. Its got a bare dirt floor which is mostly sand, falling insulation, and a musty smell. A lot of the homes in Ocean Pines are 2nd homes or weekend beach homes, so they aren't opened up everyday like a lived in residence. This causes a nasty smell to linger inside the home if the crawlspace is musty and stinky. Once we install our crawlspace vapor barrier and other crawlspace moisture control elements, the smells go away and the home is fresh and pleasant to the nose. In this particular home, the owners decided to pull the insulation out after we left to save a little money.
