The slotted piece of pipe is a specially made fitting that keeps the discharge pipe from freezing. During normal operation the crawlspace sump pump will discharge water without spraying on the ground. When the cold weather comes and the pipe freezes up, those slots allow a temporary release for the sump pump. This small innovation has prevented countless sump pump failures and crawlspace floods.
