Unsuitable support jacks
This type of "adjustable" support column is common in basements around Delmarva. How easy do you think it would be to adjust a rusty old piece of metal? The bracket at the top isn't even large enough to cover the span of the girder.
Black spots and bent metal
In this picture you can see the thin metal bracket bent under the weight of the home. There is also some evidence of crushed wood. This happens when the wood absorbs the moisture in the air and softens. Think of a pasta noodle, starts out very stiff but when it soaks up water it becomes soft.
More crushed wood
There is quite a bit of crushed wood in this photo. Almost looks like the column could end up acting like a nail being driven into the house under its own weight. Scary stuff
Slipping and crushing unevenly
What happens when the thin column becomes uneven? Can it bend or slip out of place? It is certainly possible. If you see anything like this in your basement, be sure to call for a free inspection today.
