Black spots and bent metal

In this picture you can see the thin metal bracket bent under the weight of the home. There is also some evidence of crushed wood. This happens when the wood absorbs the moisture in the air and softens. Think of a pasta noodle, starts out very stiff but when it soaks up water it becomes soft.
