If something sounds strange, trust your instincts.

I’m always looking for new and interesting things to write about, new stories to share with you folks. I often tell the inspectors and crews that if they see or hear anything interesting to come and tell me about it so I can put something together for your enjoyment. Derek came to me the other day and showed me a few pictures of an oddity he came across in his travels. He is one of our inspectors and when he saw this air moving system it struck him as strange.

Strange days…

Fan in the crawlspace  The homeowner told Derek that a company came in and claimed that they could pull air through the crawlspace to ventilate it and keep the air fresh. Sounded good at the time, but once it was installed it became a nightmare. He explained all about how the system was supposed to work. This other company installed a heavy duty fan that pulled air out of the crawlspace and blew it outside. Derek saw the fan, and it was indeed blowing air outside. The biggest problem came when they noticed where the air was being pulled from. This company cut a hole in the floor, up into the house itself, and put a grate over it. The fan was pulling the conditioned air from the house, down into the crawlspaceExhaust fan blows clean air outside, and then forcing it back outside. If that sounds strange to you, it should. This homeowner was essentially paying to air condition the outdoors. What’s worse is that he saw a worse mold problem and higher humidity AFTER the fan was installed. Luckily, Derek was able to show him our SaniDry air machine and CleanSpace system. The SaniDry and CleanSpace vapor barrier work together to lower humidity and dry out the crawlspace. Most people even see a drop in their energy bills because the air that naturally comes up through the floor from the crawlspace is cleaner and drier. The air conditioner doesn’t work as hard and the house just feels better.
