Hurricane Sandy damages much of Delaware and Maryland's coastal areas
After Hurricane Sandy came through we got a lot of calls from people all over the peninsula. Flooding, crawlspace odors, and especially foundation cracks were the main topics of discussion. Sometimes people don’t realize that water is one of the most destructive forces on Earth. Most of our calls were from communities like Rehoboth, Lewes, Ocean City, Crisfield, Ocean Pines, and Cambridge. All these areas have one thing in common, they are all close to some major body of water. When that storm hit the East Coast, the water level rose very quickly. I saw a few news channels that were showing breaking waves on Coastal Highway in Ocean City, MD.
One home in Fenwick Island, DE had a sliding glass door shatter from the force of the waves hitting it. The homeowner went down to check on the damage after the storm (luckily the door led into an empty garage area and not his living room). When he was walking on the concrete he felt a little vertigo. It turns out that the water had created a sink hole under the concrete slab of the garage floor. We used so much concrete “slurry” to fill the hole that we could’ve filled a dumpster. Can you imagine having a hole that size under the garage floor and then parking your car on top? I hope you are insured.
The process we used is commonly called mudjacking. Its been around for quite a while and, along with a slab pier, is the most effective way to fix a slab foundation problem. Many times we can actually lift the slab a little, but the primary reason for mudjacking is stabilizing the slab itself. No one wants to fall into a sink hole that they didn’t even know was there.
