Myths and Facts About Basement and Crawl Space Insulation

Why are there so many ways to insulate your crawl space?

The most common misconception regarding how to insulate your crawl space is to use batten insulation on the ceiling. Batten insulation hat is the yellow insulation you see falling from the ceiling of the crawlspace in the photo attached. Batten insulation is normally made from fiberglass and glued to a piece of paper. The installer will then shove or stuff it into the joist cavity above the crawl space and place a little metal rod in an attempt to hold the insulation in place. We know now that it isn't a bad product but it is used in the wrong place, as it is not designed to withstand the wet, and damp conditions typically found in a crawl space. This insulation will absorb the moisture in the air, loose it's insulating properties, and eventually fall out of the floor joists. This insulation should instead be installed in the attic or in the walls or the conditioned living space.

Some people believe that spray foam is the answer, and compared to the batten insulation it is a step in the right direction. However, we have seen termites tunnel between the foam and the concrete wall and attack the wood behind it. Once again, we believe this is a good insulation product being used in the wrong place.

DryZone uses SilverGlo insulation for the crawl space. We will use it for the foundation walls and for insulating the banner board or as it is sometimes referred to the 'rim joist.' SilverGlo is a rigid foam board and the thickness is constant, which is a big advantage over the batten insulation and the liquid spray foam. SilverGlo allows for an inspection area so termites can be seen and treated. One big advantage with our insulation is we stop the air as it comes into the crawlspace, which will reduce your heating and cooling cost as the temperatures and relative humidity are brought under control.
