Foundation Situations
There are two different types of foundation problems. The first one is Vertical settlement. This happen when the soil under your home shrinks or shifts, then your foundation or parts of it will settle. If the whole foundation settles evenly, you don’t notice anything. However, one part of your home usually settles more than another part and causes cracks in your foundation.
The second one is Horizontal movement. This is when the soil outside of your foundation walls expands and it can cause horizontal movement of your foundation. Because your foundation walls are not supposed to move inward-they crack, bow, lean in, push in and sometimes slide in.
If that happens, some contractors on Delmarva would most likely recommend concrete slab replacement. This is when all of the homes furnishings, floor coverings, and interior partition walls must be removed. Then contractors take a jackhammer to break the existing floor slab into small pieces. All of those small pieces must be removed from the home by hand. A new floor is then poured and allowed to cure for at least two weeks. Interior partition walls can be rebuilt, floor coverings are re-installed, and home furnishings are brought back into the home. The main problem with this type of solution is that the problems were never solved; you see the soils under the home failed not the concrete itself.
